BIRDS –
Looking and Learning in the Cooler White Mountains
Based at Rustic Tal-Wi-Wi Lodge in
Alpine
Thursday, May 21 – Monday, May 25, 2009 (Memorial Day Weekend)
PHOENIX-AREA (I-17 AND DUNLAP) PICK UP AND RETURN WILL BE
AVAILABLE
On this unique summer birding
adventure from Tucson, we’ll travel north to Alpine, Arizona to
the rustic and beautiful Tal-Wi-Wi Lodge deep in the Apache-Sitgreaves
National Forest where we will bunk for four nights. Tal-Wi-Wi
has a saloon and a very good restaurant on the premises, but no
televisions or telephones in rooms (wireless Internet is
available). Experienced bird guide and bird educator Kathe
Anderson of Scottsdale will lead us on some early extended
morning walks on the lodge property and to some nearby White
Mountain hot spots, including (depending on time) Becker Lake,
Wenima Wildlife Area, Little Colorado River South Fork, and
Green’s Peak area. We’ll also try some dusk/night-time owling. Kathe
has led over one hundred volunteer bird walks for Boyce Thompson
Arboretum, Hassayampa River Preserve, Gilbert Water Ranch, and
various Audubon chapters. As a professional guide, she has also
led many trips for private clients to birding sites in Arizona,
New Mexico, and California.
She also teaches a series of interactive birding classes
designed for beginning to intermediate birders. This trip will
include Kathe’s three basic birding classes, fun interactive
learning activities with topics including bird identification,
binoculars, and books; seasons and locations; spotting and
identifying; and bird behaviors and songs. In the afternoons,
you will be free to relax, read a book, or join the Top Tyranno
in easy woods walks/strolls near the lodge. One night, we
will do dinner at the noted Cafe Beate German restaurant in
nearby Nutrioso. Another night, it may be dinner at the famous
Molinos family Mexican restaurant in Springerville (meals not
included in tour fee). Tour departs on Thursday at 7:00 AM from
and returns on Sunday by 6:00 PM to the Tucson International
Airport Park & Save remote parking lot on the SE corner of S.
Tucson Blvd. and E. Corona Rd. where vehicles can be safely
parked for $4 per day. Limited to 8 participants. Chief Guide
and Top Tyranno: Stephen H. Buck, PhD.
