Native People of the Southwest –
A Winter Weekend Program at
Bear Mountain Lodge in Silver City
Friday, January 16 - Monday, January 19,
2009

On
this tour from Tucson, we’ll travel on Friday to Silver City,
New Mexico to the Nature Conservancy’s beautiful Bear Mountain
Lodge B&B. In the
past in winter's heart of darkness, native peoples gathered
around fires and told stories. At Bear Mountain Lodge, the
tradition continues as we sit around the hearth and visit nearby
preserves for a winter weekend of Apache and Mimbreño lore. Who
were these peoples and what stories guided their lives? What
messages have drifted down to us through time? Joined by a local
naturalist, an archaeologist, an astronomer, and a Native
American storyteller, we will look for answers scattered among
the stones and stars. And in the warm light of the Lodge's fire,
we will look beyond winter's darkness into the storied heart of
local history. Lodging at Bear Mountain includes all breakfasts,
three tasty dinners, and one sack lunch. The annual Red Paint
Powwow will be in progress this weekend, so we will attend. We
will also visit the Western New Mexico University Museum in
Silver City and make an en-route stop at the Deming-Luna Mimbres
Museum. Tour departs on Friday at 8:00 a.m. from the Tucson
International Airport Park & Save lot at S. Tucson Blvd. and E.
Corona Rd., where vehicles can be safely parked for $4 per day.
Return will be to the same location on Monday by 6:00 p.m.
